Natural Habitat

Although the Park River watershed flows through one of the most urbanized areas along the Connecticut River, the river still provides habitat for migratory songbirds that thrive on native plants. All waterways in West Hartford, as well as waterways in most of Newington, New Britain, Bloomfield, Hartford, and parts of Wethersfield flow into the Park River watershed, which flows directly into the Connecticut River. Urban and residential development has damaged the natural ecological vitality of the watershed. According to bioassessment criteria, the North Branch of the Park River has consistently ranked as severely to moderately impaired in water quality tests conducted through Project SEARCH
